Training Kit on Psychological First Aid
When tragic events occur in our communities, our countries, and our world, we want to extend a helping hand to those affected by these crises. We present here psychological first aid, which includes humane, supportive, and practical assistance for our fellow human beings who are suffering from a serious crisis event. This programme has been designed for those in a position to help people who have experienced painful events. It also provides a framework for supporting individuals in ways that respect their dignity, culture, and abilities. Despite its name, the psychological first aid programme also provides social support alongside psychological support.
-
Initial psychological first aid:
First aid refers to the assistance provided to a sick or injured person before specialised medical treatment can be obtained.
-
Psychological first aid:
It is an alternative to psychological debriefing, which has been proven ineffective. By contrast, psychological first aid includes factors that appear to be extremely useful in people's long term recovery process, according to various studies and the consensus of many crisis assistance providers. These factors include:
A feeling of safety, connectedness to others, calm, and hope.
The possibility of obtaining social, physical, and emotional support.
A sense of the ability to help oneself as individuals and communities.
Objectives of Initial Psychological First Aid:
Preserving life when a person may pose a danger to himself.
Providing assistance to prevent the psychological problem from becoming more severe.
Encouraging the restoration of psychological health.
Comforting the person who has a psychological problem.
Psychologists and social workers, emergency volunteers, and psychological support staff.
