مسألة تعديل سلوك الإنسان وتربيته -ضمن منهج صحيح وشامل- ترتقي لأن تكون أعظم وظيفة في الوجود ؛ ذلك لكونها وظيفة الأنبياء والمرسلين، ورسالة الدعاة والمصلحين، لذا فقد كان غرسُ القِيَم النبيلة والأخلاق الحميدة جُلّ اهتمام القادة والمربين عبر الأزمان.
يشير المفهوم إلى استبدال سلوك غير مرغوب فيه بسلوك أخر مرغوب فيه، بل يمتد إلى الإحلال.
ويمكن تعريف تعديل السلوك بأنه التطبيق التربوي لمبادئ التعلّم السليم، والمشتقة من مبادئ الإسلام الحنيف ونظريات التعلّم الحديثة، والمتضمن تقوية السلوك المرغوب فيه وإطفاء السلوك غير المرغوب فيه.
