The atmosphere is the gaseous envelope that surrounds the Earth completely. The lower part of the atmosphere consists of several main gases that are colourless, tasteless and odourless, combined in fixed proportions on the Earth's surface, except in certain cases where the proportion of carbon dioxide varies.
The Purpose of Research into the Atmosphere?
Humans live on Earth and breathe within the atmosphere, which provides us with the oxygen necessary for breathing and takes in the carbon dioxide gas that we exhale. Likewise, the atmosphere filters out most of the harmful forms of sunlight and traps the heat generated from the Earth's surface, as well as transferring energy from the equator to the poles, which makes our planet habitable. It also captures the moisture produced by the evaporation of lake and ocean water and transfers it to dry lands to secure drinking water and preserve agricultural wealth.
