Training Kit on Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
Learning critical thinking skills is extremely important for developing the ability to make appropriate decisions regarding the situations students face. Accordingly, the programmes and research developed to teach individuals in general, and students in particular, thinking skills of all kinds have become varied.
Problem-based learning has existed throughout the ages; in the Stone Age, people learned the skills and means to solve problems in order to survive, and all research and studies are attempts at solving problems, even if we do not call them that.
The problem-solving strategy enables students to learn scientific concepts and challenges their previous cognitive structures, and challenges the usual frames of reference by presenting a new problem in a teaching-learning situation that forces students to think and review their previous concepts. The type of problem, the way it is presented, and the method of solving it differ according to the final educational goal: some aim to develop the spirit of innovation and creativity, others aim to develop self-confidence, a third aims to develop the ability to apply specific ideas and skills and evaluate their degree of performance in certain situations, and a fourth aims to teach certain scientific principles and increase students' understanding of them.
