Competencies are defined as a set of shared personal characteristics found in leaders and required to achieve outstanding performance, noting that they include the behaviours, knowledge, and practical skills that are considered essential and fundamental to any work as long as they support the process of achieving the strategy. These competencies can also be developed in individuals rather than being left without dynamic action to activate them.
Competencies form an element that inspires confidence that the leader will be able to guide the entire organisation, whether large or small, in the direction it wants to take, and leadership competencies are usually contained within a framework that includes detailed descriptions of each competency, and the levels that can be reached within each competency. Organisations can develop their own leadership competency framework in a way that is consistent with the organisation's needs and specific environment, and it applies to leadership roles and to any level of service.
