Training Kit on the Fundamentals of Materials Science
The materials engineering specialisation is considered one of the modern and advanced specialisations that prepares the engineer to deal with a large range of metals and engineering materials, using modern techniques for this purpose in the fields of industry, production, scientific research, and materials development centres. It is considered one of the important departments and ranks first in developed countries, being the foundation for all engineering departments. A graduate of the materials engineering department acquires theoretical knowledge combined with practical experience in many industrial fields, and university study qualifies him in the optimal selection of materials and the study of their properties, methods of manufacturing, testing, developing, and their uses.
The Importance of Studying Engineering Materials
It is well known that materials form the main entity of various engineering works, from buildings to machines, etc. Therefore, the engineer, regardless of his specialisation and the work he carries out, must deal with materials at every step of his work, in order to build and maintain the engineering work, so that he can perform his role as an engineer with the capability expected of him.
The mining engineer extracts raw material ores from their primary sources and concentrates them for use on an economic industrial scale, while the civil, architectural, mechanical, electrical, or chemical design engineer designs the facility or machine from a particular material or materials to withstand the loads and conditions required by the work being carried out, taking into account efficiency at the lowest possible cost.
The Nature of Engineering Materials
Engineering materials refer to the materials used by the engineer in his work, whether for structures, such as stone, brick, cement and concrete materials, timber, tiles, roof tiles, plastic, rubber, metals, glass, flooring and roofing covering materials, fastening and welding materials, and insulating materials, among others.
Materials engineers, manufacturing technicians, and welding and inspection staff.
