Training kit on classroom visit skills for the school principal
The role of the school principal is one of the vital roles in improving educational quality at the school. One of the main roles the school principal can play to achieve this goal is practising classroom visit skills effectively. The school principal's classroom visit skills include several important aspects.
The concept of classroom visits:
The head of department visiting the teacher in the classroom while they are carrying out a teaching activity, with the aim of monitoring educational activities, observing classroom interaction, evaluating the teacher's performance, and assessing their impact on the pupils.
It is an analytical, guiding, evaluative, collaborative process between the educational supervisor and their colleague the teacher.
Objectives of classroom visits:
Observing the teaching situation and educational activities naturally.
Observing the teacher's impact on their pupils and assessing the extent of their progress.
Evaluating teaching methods, educational aids and activities, and assessing the extent of their suitability for the nature of learning.
Advantages of classroom visits:
They eliminate any confusion the teacher might feel if the visit were to happen unexpectedly.
Attention during the required visit focuses on what the teacher feels they need.
They strengthen the relationship between the head of department and the teacher in a way that serves and achieves the objectives of the educational process.
Duration of classroom visits:
A classroom visit takes a full lesson period, allowing the teaching situation to be observed in full, and then providing an opportunity for a collaborative study between the head of department on the one hand and the teacher on the other regarding various aspects of this situation. The head of department should distribute the classroom visits for a given teacher evenly throughout the school year, taking timing into account so as not to be too brief or too prolonged between the two visits.
Procedures for classroom visits:
Before the visit:
Determining the objectives of the visit.
Determining the date of the visit (according to the circumstances of the school schedule).
Learning about the teacher's situation in order to form a sound idea of their needs.
During the visit (inside the classroom):
The head of department should enter the classroom (or the physical education hall) with the teacher, and if they have to enter after the lesson has begun, they must ask the teacher's permission.
They should enter the classroom cheerfully, not frowning or scowling.
They should sit in a suitable place that allows them to watch the course of the lesson without disturbing the teacher or the students.
After the visit:
The head of department should, immediately upon leaving the classroom, record the most prominent activities that took place in the lesson, and their observations on them.
They should meet with the teacher, since this is considered a fundamental activity for fulfilling the purpose of the educational visit.
They should give the teacher the opportunity to express their opinion with complete freedom.
School principals, educational supervisors, and school deputies.
