Training kit on behaviour modification skills
Behaviour modification is considered a very important subject in the field of working with people with special needs, as it is an attempt made by teachers, specialists and parents with the aim of changing the overt behaviour that a child displays in different situations, by giving them the means that enable them to control this behaviour in a systematic way, and through the use of all the methods and approaches that can be used to influence human behaviour and turn it into something better in the eyes of the parents and the society in which the individual lives, and to equip people with special needs with the skills necessary for adaptive behaviour, so that they can adapt to society and their family positively, and to address inappropriate behaviours using the behaviour modification approach.
The concept of behaviour modification:
Behaviour modification is a type of therapy based on the principle of effective adaptation, which aims to replace undesirable behaviours with other, more desirable behaviours through positive or negative reinforcement, that is, through reward or punishment, such as a mother who rewards her son when he gets good grades at school or punishes him when he brings home poor grades.
Criteria for determining normal and abnormal behaviour
Behaviour may be acceptable or unacceptable, based on the criteria that are referred to, or on the value system that we determine, and for this reason our judgements about behaviour may vary according to different human societies.
We can describe behaviour as normal if it is characterised by the following:
Effectiveness
Competence
Suitability
Flexibility
Benefiting from experience
The ability to communicate humanely
Self esteem
As for the criteria for determining abnormal behaviour, they are as follows:
The cognitive activity criterion
The social behaviour criterion
The self control criterion
The distress and anguish criterion
The statistical rarity criterion
Developmental criteria
The subjective criterion
The normative criterion
