Reliance (tawakkul) is the heart's true dependence upon God, Mighty and Exalted, in seeking benefits and warding off harms in matters of this world and the hereafter, and the belief that none but He, glorified and exalted, gives, withholds, harms or benefits. Reliance upon God originally means that the servant entrusts his affair to God and surrenders his condition to Him, and that he depends on his Lord in meeting his needs and trusts in Him. Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with him, said: "Reliance is trust in God, and the truth of reliance is that you trust in God and in what is with God, for that is greater and more lasting than what you have in your worldly life."
This is a state of the heart that arises from its knowledge of God and His uniqueness in creation and management, in harm and benefit, in giving and withholding, and that whatever He wills comes to be even if people do not will it, and whatever He does not will does not come to be even if people will it. This necessitates for the heart dependence upon Him, entrusting matters to Him, tranquillity in Him, trust in Him, and certainty of His sufficiency in whatever is relied upon Him for.
