Happiness is often defined through employees' experiences and the general assessment of the quality of their lives. Since individuals spend a great deal of their time in the workplace, understanding the role that employment and the work environment play in shaping happiness for individuals and societies is of great importance.
However, it should be noted from the outset that the relationship between happiness and employment is a complex and dynamic interactive process that works in both directions. Recent research indicates that work and employment are not only drivers of happiness, but happiness itself can also help shape labour market outcomes, productivity, and even organisational performance.
Happiness is a word with two sides: the first is experiential and refers to the psychological state in the present moment, and the feeling of positive emotions such as hope, joy, and enthusiasm; happiness thus lies in the prevalence of these positive emotions over negative ones. The second side is evaluative, in which individuals reflect on the moments of happiness they have experienced before and how this can contribute to their overall sense of satisfaction.
